Jan's Make Your Own Web Site

Welcome to Jan's web site and blogs! Have you been thinking about how to make your own web site and wondering how to go about doing it? Building a web site is not all that difficult. You don't have to be a technical whizz to create a nifty looking web site. It's all about choosing the right web hosting company and using the right software to run and maintain a web site. Your web site can be your own personal Wordpress websites blog or you could run an ezine, a forum site or even an online photography sites.

Though this a personal website which I use it for blogging; I also use it to test out various web site software scripts for example for CMS (content management system) I've tested out the Wordpress, Joomla, Mambo, Drupal and Postnuke installations; I've also tested out the forum software like phpbb and SMF; I have installed, uninstalled so many times until Google and other search engines may be going bonkers to list and delist this site web URLs. To create a simple website is not too difficult especially if the web hosting company you sign up provides the right tools for doing it. Once the web site is up and ready, how you want to run it, and use it is a bigger challenge than setting it up!

First things first, before you can set up a web site you need a web hosting company and a domain name. So read up this article below or jump headlong into signing up with a web hosting company.

Western Digital My Book External Hard Drive

Having switched over to using digital SLR photography, the amount of storage space required for storing and backing up RAW files jumped up tremendously! I had considered various options for data backup, but in the end settled on using the bulkier Western Digital My Book external hard drive instead. You may ask why I don’t [...]

Fixed my Wordpress websites auto install using Simple Script

During my last upgrade, I crashed my Wordpress websites and after I made the web site to work, it broke the Fantastico DeLuxe automatic upgrade feature. Manual upgrading was a little tedious and I had to go through several steps to make any update to the Wordpress installation. I did find another way to make [...]

Popular Post Widget for Wordpress Websites

I’ve been looking around for a widget that will display for example the top ten most popular posts in a Wordpress websites blog. The only widget I found was the “Popularity Contest” widget in the Wordpress.org website. Unfortunately many users complained about it being buggy, not working with fatal error or not reporting posts that [...]

Interesting maths

Received this in my inbox. Intriguing. Looked like some mathematician has too much time in his hands. Nevertheless, still quite fun. Just grab yourself a calculator and follow the instruction. Have fun! 1. Use a calculator and key in your first 3 digits of your handphone number (9##) 2. Multiply this 3 digits by 80 3. Add [...]

Finally removed my drupal installation

Finally it was done. Having used the 301 redirect for those web pages created in Drupal to this Wordpress websites, I could safely uninstall my Drupal installation. Before removing the Drupal installation, I made a quick backup of my .htaccess file. Drupal has a knack of modifying common files that it shares with . After [...]

Microsoft Word 2007 crashes once again, considering to use Open Office 3.0

I just about had it with Microsoft Word 2007. Even after using the regedit fix by deleting the data and options in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/12.0/Word of the registry files, Microsoft Word 2007 still crashes whenever I started it up. It took many frustrating tries to force that program to start up properly. Crashes only happens with Word [...]

Solved my Office Word 2007 crashing

I always wondered why whenever I start up the Office Word 2007 in Windows Vista and before it could run, it just turn sickly pale and then died by crashing. I have to start it up several times before it finally stabilizes. Very irritating and left me to contemplate using the alternative from Open Office. [...]

Redirecting web pages using 301 redirect

After manually shifting the content from the Drupal database to the Wordpress websites, I needed to redirect the traffic from the Drupal pages to the new url. There are several ways of redirecting web pages and each has its pros and cons. According to several web sites, the best way to redirect is to use [...]

Planning to tweak my website again

I have been thinking about it awhile. With so many disparate SQL database and sub web site scattered around this personal domain of mine, I thought of cleaning it up a bit. After all, most of the incoming web site traffic is to this blog anyway. This might also meant breaking some incoming links. Well [...]

Caversham Wildlife Park

What’s a visit to Australia without at least visiting one of the animal parks? So we made a detour along the way of our Swan Valley Food and Wine Trail and headed to Caversham Wildlfe Park. The road was off the main route and it was rather quiet. It was too difficult to find as [...]

Black Swan Winery and Cafe

Arriving at Black Swan, we were still quite early. Just a little before noon time. Feeling not that hungry, but we were still planning to have our lunch meal here as the next stop would be the Caversham Wildlife Park. We decided we would order less. The Black Swan was a nice looking cafe. It [...]

Oggies Ice Cream

“You must joking?!” That’s what my in-laws said. The weather was cold and we were going to eat Oggies Ice Cream? Well, that was one of the interesting stops along the Swan Valley Food and Wine Trail. Catherine said we must try their ice-cream, it was different. So we got off on our first stop [...]

Swan Valley Food and Wine trail

Swan Valley is located to the north-east of Perth, Australia and takes an approximate 30 minutes drive from Perth according to the guidebook. However we were already smack right in the middle of Swan Valley with our accommodation in the Vines Apartment so no need to worry about the distance. On the other hand, there [...]

Fremantle, Western Australia

Fremantle is located about 30 minutes drive from the South-West of Perth, Australia. Fremantle was named after Sir Charles Howe Fremantle, a 28 year old captain of HMS Challenger who took over this area in 1829. Later on settlers from Britain came over and colonized the place and it became the Swan River Colony. Much [...]

The Vines Apartment, Swan Valley, Perth.

The Vines Apartment in Swan Valley was truly a great accommodation. Only problem was that it was located quite far away from Perth city, Australia. It takes about 50 minutes of driving from Perth. You may wonder why we ended in such an isolated accommodation. Well, sometime ago we joined Sara Worldwide Vacation Club which [...]

Driving around Perth, Australia

Self driving in Perth, Australia is not too difficult. Their cars are right hand drive with cars driven on the left lane, same as per Malaysia and Singapore. All you need is a valid driving license and you could drive in Australia. No need to apply for an international driving license. Being in an unfamiliar [...]

Our Perth Vacation Itinerary

Thanks to Catherine who did most of the legwork of compiling brochures and putting up the vacation itinerary. I did try to look up some info online, but it was very difficult to plan the Perth Vacation itinerary myself sue to my unfamiliarity. Before the trip, I went to MPH bookstore, I couldn’t find any [...]

Perth, Western Australia

We had a great time in Perth, Western Australia for vacation! The climate weather was good with clear blue skies. With eight days seven nights worth of holiday vacation, it was a relaxing getaway from all the hustle and bustle of daily grind. Perth is located on the south-western area of Australia. It has a [...]

Off for a trip to Perth Australia

This was one trip that was almost naught. Malaysian Airlines in all its apparent cost cutting measure decided to cancel my returning flight. Since I managed to apply for 4 days leave, I now have to apply for a full week. But the problem was, boss was not very pleased about his staff taking a [...]

Using Fantastico De Luxe and Simple Scripts to install your software

One of the best thing about using BlueHost with the build in Fantastico De Luxe installs and Simple Scripts, it makes installation of any software like Joomla, Wordpress, phpBB, etc a breeze. Streamyx is slow again

TM’s streamyx service is getting bad again these past week. Looks like more kvetching about their lousy broadband service. With WIMAX looming to be launched, I wonder how’s their internet service in comparison with all the pretenders out there vying to get a piece of the internet service provider market. Maxis, Celcom and Izzi with [...]

Dreamweaver web building software or content management system (CMS)?

I’m never a fan of bloated web building software like Dreamweaver or Microsoft Frontpage. Sure they are very easy to use for designing a web page. Very much like using Microsoft Word or Powerpoint, just create a box here and there and add in your content, pictures and whatever you need to create your web [...]

Phising website - MSN block delete checker - different look, same modus operandi

Whoa, so they try to change their look to trick unsuspecting MSN instant messenger user into giving up their user id and password, no? The phising trick is still the same, enter your MSN login id and password and that’s it. You are hacked! This is what the website looked like. Don’t be fooled. Don’t [...]

switching off the on-screen keyboard for Windows Vista

I inadvertently switched on the On-Screen Keyboard when I resumed the Windows Vista PC from its sleep / hibernation mode. Somehow the sleep / hibernation mode disabled my Dell Vostro 200 USB keyboard whenever I resumed from it (this makes another minus point for using sleep / hibernation mode). I had to switch on the [...]
