Battery Charger Blinking Means Battery Dead

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Having so many digital devices means you would need lots of rechargeable batteries. Since rechargeable battery can be expensive so I would try to maintain and extend the battery life as much as possible. Sometimes it was just too bad the battery has reached the end of their lifecycle when my battery charger was blinking which indicate a dead battery.

HTC Cha Cha Review

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

I have been using HTC Cha Cha for more than a week now, so now have a good feel about this Android mobile phone. Earlier I was musing whether to tango with HTC Cha Cha or HTC Salsa. But in the end I bought this model because I am still very much a keyboard user. Though the PDA sales guy said that I was also rather fast when tapping out on the full screen

model. I think a real keyboard provides better touch typing sensitivity than a virtual keyboard.

Livescribe Pulse Smartpen

Monday, June 13th, 2011

I bought myself a Livescribe Pulse Smartpen recently when All IT had a promo for the 2GB smart pen version. The Livescribe pen was in my mind for quite some time, but the price tag sort of put me off. The idea of digitizing what you wrote as well recording notes while writing your notes is an intriguing idea.

When the offer price of RM399 for the 2

GB Livescribe Pulse Smart Pen came about, I decided to do a bit more research before plunging into it. I found that the smartpen is also offered in Amazon and at a much cheaper price too! Even if I were to include the shipping cost all the way from USA to Malaysia there is indeed a huge cost savings! Especially if I were to go for the Livescribe Echo Smartpen with 4GB memory storage the savings were very substantial.

Livescribe Pulse Smartpen

I didn’t order it via Amazon was due to the warranty issue. Since nowadays digital products defect rate is rather high. I can attest to the fact of the many warranty claims that I have gone through for the various IT and electronic products. The defect rate is hovering between 5 to 10% so a 1 in ten chance that I might get a defective unit. So better pay more for locally sold product. Would have like to get the Echo 4 GB smart pen though! But the price wasn’t very attractive at RM699! Besides, I’m not too sure whether I would be able to fully make use of it. (more…)

Installing a portable Ubuntu Linux in a USB Thumbdrive

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

I couldn’t wait for the price of 32GB USB thumb drive to come down and decided to get one. I think the current size of most USB drive is way more than enough for the average Joe’s but not for power users like me! It seems like Moore’s Law don’t seem to apply for the USB thumb drive anymore if there is a lower demand for more storage space in USB drive. It now takes ages for the prices to come down for USB drive and if you compare with say a portable hard drive, it sure is lagging behind!

Solution to slow data transfer of WD MyBook using Firewire 1394 with Windows 7

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Earlier this year, I upgraded my AMD Gigabyte PC from Windows Vista to Windows 7, 64bit. Although I was pleased with the nicer to use W7 and the better memory management using base 64 rather than the 32 bit thereby using up the entire 4GB of RAM memory efficiently. I noticed while transferring large files as well as large number of files (>1 GB) between WD MyBook external storage drive via Firewire 1394, it took ages to get the job done. (more…)

Panasonic batteries still the best!

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Recently I decided it was time to change the batteries for my various household remote controllers. I have tried many brands of batteries and still found Panasonic batteries still the best!

Wireless remote controls may be useful, however if ever you went round counting the number of remote controls in your house you would be surprise at the number of them that you have! Apart from the usual home entertainment in my usual living room which consist of TV, DVD, Astro aka satellite cable TV decoder, my old still barely functioning VCR, there are the household fixtures such as air-conditioners and remote controlled ceiling fans in the various rooms and of course Hi-Fi cum DVD player and TV in my bedroom, that amount to quite a many remote controllers in my house! USB 2.0 to IDE / SATA Adapter

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Finally went ahead to purchase this hardware – USB 2.0 to IDE / SATA Adapter. At about $15 (RM45) it is probably not comparable to say a portable hard drive or an external powered hard drive that you can get for about $33 (RM100) with more storage capacity. I have been thinking of getting this hardware for some time now. My brother passed me an old Pentium III box and I deemed it too slow to do anything useful even if I donate it to some charity. I may as well cannibalize it for parts. One of the useful parts includes the old hard drive. (more…)

NAS Dongle (aka Wanser-R) Review

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

I was thinking of using something simple like NAS Dongle also known as Wanser-R by MRT-Communication, a Taiwanese company for my office simple LAN network setup. The idea is to use this cheaper alternative than a full blown Network Attached Storage (NAS) device for storage and backup of files. (more…)

WD MyBook seems to be slowing down

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

This Western Digital WD MyBook external hard drive which I got around Nov 2008 seems to be slowing down. Whevener I want to store a large file, it lags and takes ages to copy over. I’m not sure whether this is due to Windows 7 and the overal hardware of my desktop PC or just this WD MyBook HDD fault.

I tried switching from its current firewire connection to a standard USB connection and there was a slight improvement. Could be my imagination. Perhaps the Windows 7 firewire driver is not so good or what I’m not sure. Previously in Windows Vista the data movement was pretty smooth. (more…)

Micro USB Data Cable

Saturday, December 11th, 2010

Micro USB data cable is the current standard data cable for mobile phone connection to the PC. Each new computer device will come out with new kind of USB data connector. And so I have amassed quite a collection of USB data cable starting from the standard USB-A, to USB standard-B, USB mini-B (5-pin) and finally the USB micro-B plug. (more…)
