The Pillars of the Earth, Ken Follet’s Best Seller and TV Series

Really enjoyed watching Ken Follet’s The Pillars of the Earth. Only 4 episodes of approx 1-1/2 hours each. It seems recently Astro been showing a lot of these medieval type stories with all the “game of throne” political maneuverings. A bit of a change from watching all those sci-fi shows for me lately.

Did a bit of background check on this show, it seems it took author Ken Follet 3 years and 3 months to complete the book. And it was on the best seller for 6 years! Now that’s very interesting. It was also quite a departure from his modern day thrillers that he usually wrote about.

Anyway this Pillars of the Earth has the building of a cathedral the focal point of the story set in the 12th century medieval England and shows the ambition of the various people vying for seats of power and title. Sometimes it is not just the throne where the struggle for supremacy is brutal. Other lesser titles are just as bitterly fought such Earl, Bishops, or even the completion of building the cathedral!

There is also a sequel to this book titled “World Without End (The Pillars of the Earth)” set 200 years after the cathedral was built. So perhaps I would read this book too if I can spare the time, or hopefully the producers will make another series!
